Praise Bolt, Shun Powell - Not Cool

Usain Bolt - Asafa Powell
Gold Medal Winner
Typical "Ole Nega" behavior - when someone is up we rally around them and when they are down we kick them and disperse. I have been hearing so many comments about Asafa Powell - how people are disappointed in him and how he should have done this and should have done that. Who the heck are we to talk, or criticize this phenomenal athlete. I ask you - what is your personal best in the 100M. None of you have trained a fraction of what this man has trained. None of you have done anything close to what Powell has done to help to put Jamaica on the map and you have the nerve to be criticizing Asafa Powell. The question is - What have you done for your country (whether it be Jamaica, US or another country.)
Lets give the man the credit he deserves. Just because he has not won an Olympic medal, lets not forget he held the World Record for the fastest man before Lighting Bolt came along and attained the title. And, we congratulate Bolt for that. We rallied around Powell during the 2004 Olympics, because he was one of Jamaica's best representatives. So, we lift him up when he was on top and now we want to kick him when he is not on top. Asafa Powell is still a great athlete. He may need to work on finishing strong and following through. Lets encourage him and not put him down. Lets send him words of encouragement and love, because we want to see all of our athletes do their very best.
Lets Celebrate Bolt's victory, but congratulate all the athletes that made it to the Olympics as well. Let's encourage and support and not pull down and discourage. At this time, they need all the support they can get. As a matter of fact, if anyone has an e-mail address for Powell or his manager, please spread the word, so that we can send words of encouragement as he takes on his other races.

Pat,
An excellent article, with very well made points. I for one am proud of Asafa and all that he has accomplished. He ran the full race in Beijing, not giving up, and that is all that anyone can ask of any athlete.
Too often, people are critical of others without having a full understanding of their circumstances. I have faith that Asafa will produce the results in other events to come.
Take heart Asafa, and gain strength in the knowledge that there are many Jamaicans that love you.

Thanks Stephen. I hope I was not too harsh on Asafa critics, but it had to be said.
We now see that with teamwork he has pulled through and gained a Gold Medal. Congrats to Asafa and the team.

Bolt is fast, but not the fastest man ever. Houston McTear is the worlds fastest man though forgotten be the meteric standard, so what. If we could adjust to meters from yards, he's easily a 9.5 or 9.4 in the 100 meters. He ran a 9.0 in the 100 yard dash, thats only 10 yards shorter than the 100 meters. I'll give you .6 seconds to cover 10 yards, which is way more than generous and he is still faster 9.60. Houston McTear is the fastest man to ever run the 100 meters or yards. We see absolutely that Bolt did not cross a the 100 yards mark in 9.0.
What sucks is that the records for fastest man will only be measured by 100 meters, which can easily be tested at the 100 yd mark to see who's fastest.

Wow Mrs. White, I was unaware that people said these things about Asafa Powell. I must say I am disappointed to hear this from people(much more our Jamaican people) As you said, if it had not been for him no one would be so aware of our Track & Field Jamaicans.
So I still give him his Big-Ups.But did you see how our Jamaican team came together at the 4x100 to let Afasa win his gold metal and break a world record again at the finish line.
Go Jamaica!
P.S. I am still a fan of our Jamaican Usain! We're so proud of you.

numuvs,
The 9.0 by Houtson McTear was hand timed and as such has an inherent degree of inaccuracy. Certainly McTear was very fast, and was done a great disservice by the boycott of the Moscow games. The world will never know just how fast he really was, which is unfortunate.
Back to Asafa Powell: redemption, how sweet it is! 8.77 second to break his own record for the final leg of a relay. I'm very happy to see him bounce back like this, his outings from now until the end of the season should be spectacular.
